The cultures of Asia are so different -- what a tapestry of language and tradition one can find in this part of the world!
But one thing is "universal" across ALL Asian cultures: paper-rock-scissors!
Some of you have heard me talk about the kids in Hong Kong playing paper-rock-scissors at recess, and how it was practically a contact sport. I used to marvel at their enthusiasm -- dude, their ENTHUSIASM!! -- to run down to the playground to play what was basically a glorified version of paper-rock-scissors.
But seriously, it is one of those things that kids in all Asian cultures accept as an unbiased, fair way of choosing who goes first. When it comes time to choose up, they just INSTINCTIVELY start shaking their fists to play and see who "wins"...
Here, Pastor Gillis monitors the janken (as paper-rock-scissors is called in Japanese) to see who will go first in reciting their Bible memory verses...
