Engrish (and other Miscellany)
Listed from oldest (top) to most recent (bottom)

Probably more than any other place on Earth, Japan is the home of strange English usage -- usually called "Engrish".

This page is where I'll put the examples I might find, as well as other things that catch my eye. Not everything you see here is FUNNY, dig? But just things I don't see everyday, that's all.

[ For the world's "definitive" site about Engrish, please go to Engrish.com ]

Of course, click on any image for a LARGER version...

Come on, dude -- let's LIFE... I mean, seriously...

"Creamy" plus "powder" = "creap"... Sure, I totally see that...

This is the package from a pair of thick "winter" socks I bought. After wearing them a few times, I can certainly report that these socks DO smell, but not like I expected...

Dude, you are ENTIRELY too stressed -- why not do the laundry?

"I drive an SUV because I love nature."

"YO HO HO! Catch whassup down at KFC, homies!"

(This was from the KFC at Chuo-Rinkan Station, Christmas 2004)

If anyone is looking for poupees, I know a place here where I can get you some...

Guess what color this apartment building is...

I am so glad I saw this bike in the bike parking lot the other day (yes, they not only have bike parking lots, they have stinkin' multi-level garages for bikes!).

Anyway, this is a fairly popular model, because I've seen it at least three times. My neighbor the hairdresser has a silver one just like it, but I could never take a photo of his because I felt like he'd see me doing it and think I was totally weird.

It's not just that this hair salon can give you a PEAM, it's that it'll cost you $70 (U.S.)...

I had NO IDEA the colonel could read Japanese...

"Ovomaltine!"

My friend Manuel brought me this chocolate bar back from his Christmas trip home to Switzerland -- it is some of the most amazing chocolate I have EVER eaten. I mean, maybe I was just hard up for chocolate, but WOW, I loved that stuff.

But I swear, I can't read the NAME without hearing Homer Simpson saying it -- remember the episode where he tries to play Lisa's sax, but instead of BLOWING in the mouthpiece, he just SINGS into it: "Saxomaphone!"
